Window Blinds And Shades Accuracy Measuring Tips

Accurate measuring for window blinds and shades is important, wouldn’t you say?
‘Cause it is, and to boost your knowledge and confidence in measuring for window blinds and shades without mistakes, here is a short tutorial with pictures you may find helpful.

The first example is a simple measuring task for an INSIDE MOUNT (set inside the windowsill).
To read the numbers correctly, make sure to look at the tape in a straight line (a 90 degree angle line of vision to the tape). Looking at the tape on an angle distorts your precise reading ability in this case.

Window Blinds - Measuring For Width
Measuring For WIDTH - Take 3 Separate Measurements

With a metal measuring tape, measure the left-to-right distance, or the width of the window frame (windowsill). Record all three measurements. Remeasure to make sure. Pick the narrowest number rounded to the nearest 1/8 “. That’s the WIDTH you want.

Window Shades - Measuring For Height
Measuring For HEIGHT - Take 3 Separate Measurements

Now, do the same, but measure the top-to-bottom distance, or the height of the window frame. Again, record all three measurements and recheck them for accuracy. Pick the longest distance rounded to the nearest 1/8”. That’s the HEIGHT.

NOTE
Pick the shortest distance if you are measuring for vertical blinds.
You are doing so to avoid the vanes touching or dragging over the bottom sill’s irregularities.

Measuring For Minimum Windowsill Depth
Check Out The Minimum Windowsill Depth All Along
The Window Top

Since we’re talking strictly an INSIDE MOUNT, you’ve gotta measure the sill depth. Why? You want to make sure the headrail has the minimum sill depth necessary for the holding brackets. The minimum sill depth should be along the entire width of the window at the top.

Ready to grab your ordering form now? Record the WIDTH and then the HEIGHT exact measurements.
Pay attention to what you are doing ‘cause it’s so easy to swap the two numbers. Don’t be the one who has to “kick himself or herself” later for something so easily avoidable .

Since the exact measurements are for an INSIDE MOUNT, the factory will take “deductions” to ensure the window blinds or window shades work in your windows flawlessly (without rubbing against the frame).
