How To Make Wood Blinds Last With Proper Care
You’ve invested in wood blinds to enhance your home décor because you simply prefer wood over other materials. It’s a great decision because natural wood blinds instantly add warmth and earthly feel to any room.
Since you want them to look like new for years, it is important to care of them right from the start. Cleaning wood blinds is a simple task and doesn’t need you to do anything out of the ordinary.
To make this task a little easier for you, the following easy-to-follow steps highlight the plain basics in taking care of wood blinds.
1. Vacuuming And Dusting
Wood blinds, like other natural wood products in your home, need regular dusting. The key word is “regular”, so there’s no chance for the dust to form a thick, harder-to-clean layer or grime film on the wood slat surfaces.
The easiest “regular” dusting of your wood blinds is vacuuming them with a soft brush attachment.
Depending on the dust conditions in your home environment, you need to hand-dust the blinds because soft-brush vacuuming can only go so far.
First, vacuum what you can off the slats. Doing so helps remove larger particles that could microscratch the slat surfaces while hand dusting with a cloth.
Then, lower the blind slats down and tilt them into a semi-closed position so they still have some light gaps showing and don’t overlap each other.
Grab a clean, soft cloth or a dusting mitten and gently go over the slats in both directions to pick up the layer of dust.
A little patience and time should do the trick.
Most manufacturers suggest staying away from ultrasonic cleaning of natural wood blinds. If you have specific questions about how to care for your wood blinds, or if in doubt, contact the manufacturer via their Customer Service. They’ll be more than happy to help you.
2. Cleaning Wood Blinds With A Damp Cloth
If simple dusting your blinds isn’t enough, and you have painted blinds or faux wood blinds (only), you can clean them by wiping them with a soft, damp cloth.
Cleaning blinds with a stained finish using a damp cloth is NOT recommended because the slats may warp afterwards.
As an alternative, you can periodically treat stained wood blind slats with a lemon oil wood-furniture preservative or alike.
